Champions-League-trophy

The footballing world is today reeling from the news that K.A.A. Ghent will take on VfL Wolfsburg in the first knockout round of the Champions League.

In arguably the stand-out tie of the round, the crack Belgian outfit will take on their German counterparts, with both sides confident of making it through to the quarter final of the prestigious competition.

Martin de Bruun, a reporter from Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, said: ‘The eyes of all football lovers will be concentrated on the Ghelamco Arena, as these titans of the modern game finally go head to head in a tie that has sent shockwaves of excitement from Antwerp to Zwönitz. When Jacques Ferran first conceived the idea of a continental tournament between the Champions of all the European leagues, surely it was draws like this that he was envisioning sixty years ago’.

Der Bild, in their usual under-stated way,  posted a Tweet that read: ‘Finally, we get to see who the true football hipster nation is #beardedghents’.

The match-up is the clear audience grabber in an otherwise unremarkable draw, with fans underwhelmed to see such meetings as Chelsea versus Paris Saint-Germain, and the snore-fest that is bound to be Arsenal’s clash against FC Barcelona.
