Journalist Guillem Balagué has expressed his disappointment at discovering that Sky Sports’ Spanish football studio is not actually a bodega, after being caught trying to extract beer from a pump behind the bar.

The acclaimed pundit, who has lent his analytical skills to Sky’s respected La Liga coverage for over a decade, at first tried to style out his error, but later admitted that he was bamboozled by the fact that you can’t get a drink despite its tavern setting.

He said: ‘They host programmes from the Sky canteen, and you can definitely get food there, so it’s not a massive leap to presume I could get a cerveza. And spent all of last season presuming Scott Minto was a waiter. He’d be asking all these terrible questions about Lionel Messi’s scoring record, and all the time I’d be politely answering whilst waiting for him to take my order.

‘Gaizka (Mendieta) once said to me, “When’s he going to get me my San Miguel?”, so clearly I wasn’t the only one slightly confused by this’, he added.

Sky have issued an apology to Balagué, and have promised him that they will at the very least provide analysts with tapas in the future.
