Ander Herrera has been banished by Louis van Gaal to Manchester United’s Under-21 squad after daring to express a modicum of creative ability during the Red Devil’s most recent training session.
van Gaal has earned his reputation over the past two decades by placing team instructions ahead of individual abilities, a tactic that has won his sides trophies throughout Europe, but often at the expense of entertaining, free-flowing football. Indeed, it is this adherence to the system that has seen him fall out of favour with a large majority at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman told reporters: ‘Ander’s actions were totally against the orders I gave, and as such he must be punished appropriately. It is not for him – or any of the players – to decide that a subtle flick, or well-measured slide rule pass is the right thing to do when I have explicitly told them beforehand to keep things simple, and to maintain constant possession of the ball.
‘Perhaps a spell alongside the younger players will persuade Ander that tactics comes before flair,’ the 64-year-old added.
United find themselves second in the Premier League table ahead of their home tie against West Ham United this weekend.
