Millwall have announced plans to sue England’s successful women’s team over their use of the word ‘Lionesses’ in their nickname.
The south London club were formed in 1971, and have been one of the country’s leading sides for a number of years, but now face a new challenge as they take on a team that upset all the odds to finish third at this year’s Women’s World Cup.
Millwall chairman John Berylson said: ‘It’s a disgrace that they should have one good World Cup and suddenly think they rule the roost when it comes to names. Let me be clear: we were the Lionesses first, and we intend to remain the Lionesses for years to come’.
He continued: ‘We don’t have an issue with the entire nickname. England are the Three Lionesses, right? We have no problem with the ‘Three’ bit. We’re not trying to be petty here’.
