West Ham United have promised to ‘take a good look’ at themselves after pulling out at the last minute of signing Joey Barton on a free transfer.

Co-chairman David Gold admitted that he woke up in a cold sweat after a long day’s negotiating with the former Queens Park Rangers star and realised that there was no way he could sell the idea of the controversial midfielder joining the club to West Ham’s supporters.

Gold said: ‘It was a long, long day of back and forth negotiations, but eventually a deal was agreed. However, I woke up in the middle of the night and realised that I was about to sign Joey Fucking Barton. I leaned over my wife and threw up all over the floor. It was then I realised that we just couldn’t do it’.

The 78-year-old added: ‘I understand some fans were against the move, and although we ignored them at first, as we usually do, I promise that we’ll take a good look at ourselves and think first before ploughing head-first into the transfer market without giving it any thought. Seriously. Look at this face’.

Barton’s search for new, second-and-third-chance giving employers continues, while the Hammers, who bowed out of the Europa Cup in the qualifying stage, prepare for their second league tie of the season at home to Leicester City.
